Adam Desmond, founder of Binar Futures, has been named Australian Sports Father of the Year 2024 in recognition of his extraordinary dedication to transforming the lives of over 2,000 primarily Aboriginal children across Perth. Through Binar Futures, Adam has not only introduced young people to the world of sports but has also opened doors to brighter futures, guiding them toward paths filled with hope, pride, and purpose.
Over 15 years ago, Binar Futures began as a small basketball team of six. Today, it has blossomed into a thriving community that engages thousands of children across Western Australia. Adam’s vision is simple yet profound: to create a space where kids could find connection, identity, and belonging – a place where they could be part of something bigger than themselves.
Through regional basketball tournaments and school partnerships, Binar Futures brings children together from across the state. But these events are more than just games; they are moments of transformation. In these safe spaces, children rediscover their cultural roots, build lasting friendships, and gain the confidence to chase their dreams.
Many of the children who joined Binar Futures with uncertainty and doubt have found a new direction under Adam’s guidance. One young participant shared, “Adam has made me felt understood and supported throughout my whole lifetime. There were times in my life where it wasn’t going great, and the support system I had around me wasn’t the best. He provided me incredible support and told me I can do anything I set my mind to.”
The impact of Adam’s work is tangible and life-changing. Children who might have otherwise gone down a path of destruction have been empowered to believe in themselves and their abilities.
Many of the boys who started with Binar Futures in its early days are now leading the charge, working for the organisation to inspire the next generation. They are living proof that with the right support, anyone child can thrive and create a life filled with opportunities.
Adam’s dedication to Binar Futures goes beyond teaching basketball. He’s fostering resilience, cultural pride, and leadership among children.
